Saint Patrick Parish, Salt Lake City takes its name from the great saint born in approximately 385 A.D. His life began in Britain which was then under the rule of the crumbling Roman Empire. When Patrick was sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates who were among the invaders often attacking his homeland. He served as a slave in Ireland for six years before escaping to France. There he studied to become a priest. By the year 432 A.D. he had been named a bishop and was sent back to Ireland, where he worked for thirty years. It is said that he baptized 120,000 people and helped introduce the Latin language to Ireland. The symbol of Saint Patrick is the shamrock that he used to teach the doctrine of the Holy Trinity.
